Anatomy Scan

We had our anatomy scan on Thursday and it went great! Everything with Baby BB was measuring perfectly! He/she was a wiggle worm so it took the tech a few times to get all the measurements. Mr. BB almost caved and decided to find out the baby's gender but he didn't. It looks like we really won't know baby's gender until November...sigh.

Baby is very active and the other kids have enjoyed feeling him/her move around in my belly.

I think Mr. BB and I have settled on for sure boy/girl names but I don't want to share just yet!

My back has been hurting so bad the past few days. Today I caved and took a Tylenol. I haven't been sleeping well either because I can't get comfortable. It seems too early for all of this!

This is short, Mr. BB and I have a wedding to go to today and in order not to be a lame-o I want to nap!

Best,

16 Weeks

Belly Measurement/Weight: + 2!

Physical Progress: My midwife says my uterus is just below my belly button.

How I am feeling about my body: I still feel really good. I did get sun burnt today along with an itchy rash. Sun burn + itching = sucky!

Cravings/Aversions: I love chocolate milk lately and still candy.

Energy Level: Tired today from my allergic reaction to the sun.

Baby Movement: Yes! Just a little rolling feeling, so cool!

Thoughts/Feelings/Emotions: Still enjoying this pregnancy.

16 Week Appointment Update: I got a blood draw today for neural tube defects, not because I have any risk factors but because it is that time. I am still anxious about it though. I think I will call Monday and check for results. We scheduled our tour of the birth center/hospital for June 1st. Our anatomy scan as well as a fetal echocardiogram (due to the abnormal NT results) is July 6th. On June 8th we are going to a natural birth "expo" type thing where there will be counselors, people who specialize in wraps to show us, and a bunch of other stuff. It is free through the hospital! Lots of exciting stuff coming up. Plus next month I will be half way done!

Names: Our boy name is Asher, we are still working out a middle name. We really liked Mia for a girl name but it is in the top 10 for 2010 and that is WAY too common. I swear I have looked at every single name ever and we can't find one we love. Suggestions are welcome!

Anatomy Scan & Baby Sassy Bud has a name!

First things first- our anatomy scan results were perfect. Baby Sassy Bud weighed in at a half a pound and all the measurements were great. I'm always relieved to hear good results. I think IF has left me waiting for something bad to happen, but so far we have been so lucky to have a perfect baby and I have had a perfect pregnancy. Mr. Sassy Bud's parents went with us to the scan. I wanted them to be able to be a part of this since he is an only child and this will be their first grandchild. They were beyond thrilled to be there and I think they really enjoyed being able to see the baby "live" for the first time.

Now on to the fun part! Baby Sassy Bud was not super cooperative, but the tech was able to get a clear shot:
We are having a baby girl! I can honestly say that the moment those words appeared on the screen was the best moment of my life so far. I finally feel like this is real and that we will have a baby of our own in a few months.

Before our ultrasound, we had not discussed names at all. I had one in the back of my head for a while, even before IVF, but I didn't feel comfortable discussing a hypothetical baby so although I had mentioned it to Mr. Sassy Bud, I never asked his opinion of it. I think we were both too nervous. After we left the anatomy scan, I asked Mr. Sassy Bud what he thought and he said he loved it too, so we have a name!

Introducing "Brynn Atarah":

Keeping with Jewish tradition, she is named after Mr. Sassy Bud's grandfather's first initials. Her middle name is Hebrew and means "crown."

After our anatomy scan, we went withe Mr. Sassy Bud's mom to a few stores and she bought tons of baby clothes for her first granddaughter.

My only complaint lately is a backache and lots of bad headaches but I am seeing a chiropractor in hopes that I can get some relief for that.

The Name Game - part 1!?!?

After last weeks BIG ultrasound, it's time to pick a name. This could be interesting...

Neither side of our families have "family names" that we could pass down and now that I know we have to pick a boys name for some reason all these really cute girl names come to mind?! Hmmm...

Mr. GB has it set in his mind that Baby GB is going to be his Jr - NOT going to happen! Not just because I don't like the idea, but because I have valid reasons (at least I think they're valid). My father is a Jr and he constantly got teased being called Little R instead of R Jr. Additionally, being a Jr poses problems of credit report, banking information, and other personal information getting mixed up. Especially between two men who share the same address for a good 17-18 years?! Also, using Mr. GB Jr would make his nickname the same as my sisters - weird?! Maybe it's just me - Mr. GB and his mother (a whole other story) don't seem to think these are valid reasons.

So, that's where our discussion ended. I really don't understand the need for names to carry on?! Isn't the fact that Baby GB carries his last name enough? I guess not. I think I'm going to suggest that we separately make a list of 10 or so names in the next few weeks that we individually like and then we'll compare. He can include his idea of Jr or variations of the nickname he likes. I'm going to try to include some ideas with his first name as the middle name so he feels like his name can carry on since that seems important to him.

We have 21 or so weeks... I'm worried this may not be enough time to agree on a name - stay tuned!!! In the meantime, here's what Baby GB is up to this week.

Baby's now the size of a mango!

Vernix caseosa, a greasy white substance made of lanugo, oil, and dead skin cells (yum) now coats baby's skin, shielding it from the amniotic fluid. (Picture yourself after a nine-month bath, and the need for protection makes sense.) You might get to see the vernix at birth, especially if baby is premature.

October 17, 2009

Today is October 17th, which, is a very sad day in my family. Two years ago, my grandmother passed away. It was very tragic and upsetting, so, today is always a rough day for me.

This year, I'm finding it more difficult because I'm newly pregnant. My grandmother has been there for every big milestone in my life. This one, she won't be, and there's not anything I can do to change that.

One of the saddest things was the last few times I saw her she (of course) kept pressing about the baby stuff. We really weren't ready at that point, so, it was really cute even though mildly annoying. My grandmother was a very crafty lady - she sewed, made things, collected antiques and refinished them. She showed me a wooden high chair that must have been a million years old. She was refinishing it for me and fixing it so we could use it.

After she died there was not much left around in the house and I think the high chair was there. My dad didn't realize she was doing that for us, and, since it wasn't finished and in terrible shape he threw it away. I don't think I would have wanted it - it just wasn't the same unless she did it herself. It was more the effort and the thought that I liked about it. Made me feel really special and really close to her.

Mr. Book Bud and I have considered naming our child after her if we have a girl. I worry that if we do that my child's identity will be tied to something that ended very tragically. Also, even though I loved my grandmother, she didn't exactly have the best relationship with my mom, my sister and my mom's side of the family. My parents divorce did not exactly help that. I fear that even though I'd love to honor my grandmother, it might put an unfair burden on my daughter. Maybe she needs her own name and her own identity.

So, today I'm thinking about my grandma. I'm sad that she won't be here for us in the next year as things are changing. I'll always wish things could have ended differently for her and she could have died on her own terms. But . . . all I can do is think of her today and try to move on.
